Abstract: Architecture design of healthcare institutions has evolved and undergone many changes since the second half of twentieth century. These changes are dictated by technological advancements, new discoveries in the field of medical sciences, changing population demographics and urban setting transformation. With the rise in population urban healthcare facilities face many issues and challenges. India is having only 0.9 beds on an average per 1000 people against WHO recommendation of 1.9 beds per 1000 population. The condition of Government hospitals is also not in position to deliver better healthcare facilities and Environment. There is a need of better and more number of Healthcare institutions all over India. Healthcare is the right of every citizen and it needs to be provided. Built form or primary source of the healthcare is hospital. Government of India has listed Healthcare as 1 of the 10 parameter in the Smart Cities and has also came up with the proposal of Smart Health Hospitals or a Medicity in every Smart City. Smart Health Hospitals aims to provide better Healthcare facilities and Environment. Architecture of Healthcare institutions plays a twofold role. It plays catalytic role with in the urban environment, carries out some positive correspondence for the city and the citizen. It also has to consider the physical and psychological needs of the person. Various aspects such as functionality, health safety, security and infrastructure in hospitals needs to be altered so as sustain and provide better healthcare facilities. Infrastructure of hospital is a major concern in the upcoming time as it asks for very high energy consumption. Smart Health hospitals also aims to find the energy alternative by using renewable energy resources so as to lessen the energy load and cut the cost of running the hospital.
